Overview

German-designed multi-role frigates built with Egyptian participation representing significant Egyptian naval modernization and domestic shipbuilding capability development. Egypt ordered 4 MEKO A-200 EN (Egyptian Navy variant) with first two built in Germany, latter two in Alexandria Shipyard with technology transfer. Commissioned from 2015 onwards. Displacement of 3,600 tonnes with length of 121 metres. Features comprehensive combat systems including TRS-3D AESA radar providing air and surface surveillance, VLS launching RIM-162 ESSM air defense missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, 76mm OTO Melara main gun, Phalanx CIWS, torpedoes, helicopter facilities for medium helicopter (typically SH-2G Super Seasprite), and modern combat management system. Propulsion via CODLAG (diesel-electric and gas turbine) providing 27+ knot speed and excellent fuel efficiency. Crew of 120. Egyptian MEKO A-200 EN provides multi-mission capability including air defense, anti-surface, anti-submarine, and patrol missions. Technology transfer enabled Egyptian shipbuilders gaining experience constructing modern warships supporting domestic naval industry development. Regular Mediterranean and Red Sea operations protecting maritime interests, exclusive economic zone enforcement, and fleet training. Represents Egyptian-German naval cooperation and Egyptian naval expansion creating modern capable surface fleet. Critical for protecting Suez Canal, offshore resources, and maritime trade.
