German main battle tank with Canadian modifications forming backbone of Canadian Army armored capability. Canada acquired 120 Leopard 2 (mix of A4 and upgraded A6M) from Netherlands and Germany 2007-2012 replacing aging Leopard 1. Canadian modifications include enhanced mine protection, improved communications, thermal sights, digital systems. Features 120mm smoothbore gun, advanced composite armor, 1,500 hp engine, crew of 4. Combat experience in Afghanistan 2006-2011 demonstrating effectiveness and crew protection. Equips Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) armored regiment. Critical for high-intensity combined arms operations though Arctic mobility limited. Represents Canadian armored modernization though numbers limited compared to Cold War fleet.
