Stridsvagn 122 (Strv 122)
Swedish variant of the German Leopard 2A5 main battle tank, featuring extensive modifications for Swedish operational requirements and considered one of the most heavily protected Western MBTs. The Strv 122 features additional armor packages beyond the German 2A5 including Swedish-developed composite armor modules on the turret front, hull front, and sides, mine protection system under the hull, improved fire suppression systems, and upgraded electronics. Armed with the Rheinmetall 120mm L/44 smoothbore gun firing DM53 APFSDS and other NATO-standard ammunition, 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, and 7.62mm commander MG. Powered by MTU MB 873 Ka-501 diesel producing 1,500 hp. Weight of 62 tonnes. The enhanced protection makes Strv 122 one of the most survivable tanks globally against kinetic energy penetrators and shaped-charge warheads. Features modern fire control system with thermal imaging, laser rangefinder, and ballistic computer. 120 Strv 122 tanks delivered (1997-2002) equipping Swedish armoured battalions. Sweden donated 10 Strv 122s to Ukraine in 2024 following Russia's invasion.
