Overview
British anti-submarine warfare frigates transferred to Chilean Navy providing modern maritime capability. Chile acquired 3 Type 23 frigates from Royal Navy: Almirante Lynch (ex-HMS Grafton, 2007), Almirante Condell (ex-HMS Marlborough, 2008), and Almirante Cochrane (ex-HMS Norfolk, 2006). Displacement of 4,900 tonnes with length of 133 metres. Features comprehensive ASW suite with Type 2050 bow sonar and Type 2031Z towed array sonar, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Sea Wolf vertical-launch short-range SAM providing point defense, 114mm main gun, Phalanx CIWS, torpedo tubes, helicopter facilities for Lynx or similar, and modern combat management system. Propulsion via CODLAG (diesel-electric and gas turbine) providing 28+ knot speed and excellent fuel efficiency. Crew of 180. Chilean Type 23 frigates serve as premier surface combatants conducting anti-submarine warfare, maritime patrol, exclusive economic zone enforcement, training, and international deployments. The ASW capability addresses submarine threats and supports maritime domain awareness. Regular modernization and maintenance in Chile and UK maintaining capability. Complement newer German-built frigates creating capable surface fleet. Represent strong Chilean-British naval relationship continuing historical ties. Future operations limited by age but vessels expected service through 2030s with continued maintenance investment.
