Overview

The Pukguksong-3 ('Polaris-3') is a solid-fuel submarine-launched ballistic missile representing a significant capability improvement over the earlier Pukguksong-1. Successfully test-launched in October 2019, it features an extended range and improved guidance compared to its predecessor. The solid propellant reduces launch preparation time compared to liquid-fueled variants. However, North Korea's sole ballistic missile submarine (Sinpo-class) limits the operational utility of this system to the extent that the launch platform is available and survivable.
