Overview

India's latest generation stealth frigates, developed as an improved variant of the successful Shivalik class (Project 17) with greater indigenous content and advanced systems. Displacement of 6,670 tonnes full load with a length of 149 metres. The Project 17A features enhanced stealth shaping with X-form hull, composite superstructure, and extensively reduced radar, infrared, and acoustic signatures. Armed with 8x BrahMos-ER supersonic cruise missiles (increased range variant), 32-cell Barak-8 vertical launch system, 76mm main gun, AK-630 CIWS, torpedo tubes, and RBU-6000. The indigenous content exceeds 75% with Indian-developed systems including the MF-STAR multifunction radar (Israeli EL/M-2248 derivative), sonar suite, and combat management system. Propulsion is CODAD (Combined Diesel and Diesel) with 4 diesel engines for 30+ knots. Embarks 2 helicopters (Sea King or HAL ALH). Seven ships building: 4 at Mazagon Dock and 3 at Garden Reach Shipbuilders, with lead ship Nilgiri commissioning in 2024.
