Overview

India's most advanced indigenous guided-missile destroyers, featuring enhanced stealth characteristics and improved weapon systems over the preceding Kolkata class (Project 15A). Displacement of 7,400 tonnes full load with a length of 163 metres. The design features extensive radar-absorbent material application, sloped surfaces, enclosed masts, and reduced-reflection glass for a significantly reduced radar cross-section. Armed with 16 BrahMos supersonic anti-ship/land-attack cruise missiles (inclined launchers), 32-cell Barak-8 long-range SAM vertical launch system, 4x AK-630 CIWS, RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers, torpedo tubes, and a 76mm main gun. Propulsion is COGAG with 4 gas turbines (Ukrainian Zorya or US LM2500) producing 109,000 hp for speeds exceeding 30 knots. Embarks 2 Sea King or HAL Dhruv helicopters. Four ships in class: Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Imphal, and Surat — all commissioned between 2021-2024.
