Overview
Senegal operates three Piriou OPV 58m (Offshore Patrol Vessel, 58 metres) representing the most capable surface combatants in sub-Saharan West Africa. Procured from French shipbuilder Piriou, the vessels are designated OPV Niani class in Senegalese service. Each vessel displaces approximately 750 tonnes and is armed with a 76mm OTO Melara main gun, MM-40 Exocet Block 3 anti-ship missiles, 20mm autocannon, and features a helicopter flight deck. The ships are equipped with modern navigation and fire control radars, SATCOM, and modern communications. Primary missions include EEZ protection across Senegal's substantial Atlantic coastline and offshore fishing zones, counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Guinea, fisheries law enforcement, maritime search and rescue, and presence operations. The Exocet anti-ship missile capability gives Senegal credible sea denial against regional surface threats. The French connection provides strong logistical support through the established military cooperation relationship. These vessels represent a significant investment making Senegal a credible maritime power in the sub-region.
