Overview
The Hydra class is the Hellenic Navy's primary general-purpose frigate — a Greek-built version of the German MEKO 200 modular frigate design. Four ships were constructed at Hellenic Shipyards: HS Hydra (F452), HS Spetsai (F453), HS Psara (F454), and HS Salamis (F455). The class carries RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Sea Sparrow point-defense SAM, a 76mm OTO Melara gun, MU90 torpedoes, and a single NH90 helicopter. The MEKO design's modular construction has simplified upgrades over three decades of service. They form the backbone of Hellenic Navy surface forces alongside the incoming FDI Belharra frigates.
