Overview
Italian 8x8 wheeled tank destroyer armed with 120mm gun providing Brazilian Army with tank-killing firepower combined with strategic mobility of wheeled platform. Brazil ordered 98 Centauro II (designated VBC Mk2 8x8 120mm in Brazilian service) with deliveries from 2022 onwards, representing major armored capability upgrade and modernization. The Centauro II is evolved variant of original Centauro with improved protection, firepower, and systems. Features 120mm smoothbore gun (same caliber as main battle tanks) capable of defeating modern armor with kinetic penetrators and multipurpose ammunition, modern fire control system with thermal imaging and laser rangefinder enabling accurate fire to 2,000+ metres, remote weapon station (12.7mm), modular armor protection against small arms, shell fragments, and mines, weight of 30 tonnes, powered by 720 hp diesel providing road speed of 105 km/h and range exceeding 800 km, and crew of 4. The wheeled configuration provides strategic mobility enabling self-deployment over long distances at highway speeds without tank transporters — critical capability for vast Brazilian territory. Maximum road speed dramatically exceeds tracked vehicles enabling rapid repositioning. The 120mm gun provides firepower equivalent to main battle tanks while maintaining mobility advantage. Brazilian Centauro II serves in cavalry and reconnaissance units providing mobile firepower for screening operations, flanking attacks, and defensive positions. Complements heavier Leopard 1A5BR main battle tanks. Represents modern doctrine emphasizing mobility and firepower over heavy armor. Italy also operates Centauro II.
