Visby Generation 2 Class Corvette
Next-generation Swedish corvette building on the revolutionary stealth technology of the original Visby class but with significantly enhanced capabilities and firepower. Visby Gen 2 features increased displacement (estimated 1,000+ tonnes), enhanced armament including vertical launch system (VLS) for surface-to-air missiles providing area air defence capability, potential land-attack cruise missiles, improved anti-submarine warfare systems with towed-array sonar and modern torpedoes, extended endurance for operations beyond the Baltic Sea, and more powerful engines for higher sustained speeds. Retains carbon-fiber composite construction for stealth but with refined hull shape and additional radar-absorbent materials. The design incorporates lessons from the original Visby class including enhanced crew comfort for extended missions, improved command and control systems, and multi-mission flexibility. Development accelerated following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Sweden's NATO accession, reflecting increased emphasis on naval capability in the Baltic. Expected to complement or replace the original Visby class from the late 2020s.
