Type 035G Ming-Class Submarine
The Type 035G is a Chinese Ming-class diesel-electric submarine derived from the Soviet Romeo design, representing an obsolete but symbolically significant platform for Bangladesh. Bangladesh acquired two Type 035G submarines in 2017, becoming the first submarine operator in the Bay of Bengal region. Though the 1970s technology limits practical military effectiveness, the submarines give Bangladesh experience in submarine operations, allow development of anti-submarine warfare doctrine, and provide a strategic deterrence signal to regional competitors. Eight torpedo tubes fire 533mm torpedoes and potentially YJ-82 anti-ship missiles.
