Preveze/Gür Class Submarine
The Preveze-class (4 boats, 1994–1999) and Gür-class (4 boats, 2003–2007) submarines form the backbone of the Turkish Navy submarine force with 8 Type 209/1400 diesel-electric boats in service. Built by HDW Germany with the final units completed at Gölcük Naval Shipyard under license. Each submarine displaces ~1,586 tonnes submerged, is armed with 8 × 533mm torpedo tubes carrying UGM-84 Sub-Harpoon anti-ship missiles and Mk 48/Atlas DM2A4 torpedoes. AIP (Air-Independent Propulsion) is absent, limiting submerged endurance to ~7–8 days. These submarines provide credible deterrence in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean and are being gradually replaced by the newer Type 214TN Reis-class.

- 8 submarines — one of NATO's largest submarine fleets by numbers
- Sub-Harpoon anti-ship missile provides stand-off strike capability against surface combatants
- Quiet diesel-electric operation is well-suited to shallow Aegean operations
- Gölcük Shipyard provides full domestic maintenance and overhaul capability
- Extensive operational experience — Aegean deterrence patrols since 1994
- No AIP — battery endurance limits submerged operations to ~7–8 days
- 1990s/2000s technology — combat management and sensor systems dated
- HDW German license and spare parts dependency
- Being replaced by Reis-class (Type 214TN) — investment in upgrades limited
- Shallow Aegean depth profile constrains tactical maneuvering options
