MEKO 360 (Almirante Brown Class) Frigate

GermanyThyssenKrupp Marine SystemsFragataComisionado:1983
DESCRIPCIÓN DEL SISTEMA

German-designed destroyers/large frigates serving as flagships of Argentine Navy despite age and maintenance challenges — representing most capable surface combatants in fleet. Four vessels: Almirante Brown, La Argentina, Heroína, and Sarandí (commissioned 1983-1984). Displacement of 3,360 tonnes with length of 125 metres. Originally features comprehensive weapons including 8x MM40 Exocet anti-ship missiles, Albatros octuple launcher for Aspide air defense missiles, 127mm main gun, 40mm guns, torpedo tubes, and helicopter (Super Lynx or AS555 Fennec). Modern sensor suite with DA-08 air surveillance radar, fire control radars, and hull sonar. Propulsion via CODAG (diesel and gas turbines) providing 30+ knot speed. Crew of 200+. The ships suffer from decades of inadequate maintenance and budget constraints resulting in reduced operational status — typically only 1-2 vessels operational simultaneously. Recent efforts at modernization and repair improving availability. Argentine MEKO 360 frigates conduct maritime patrol, exclusive economic zone surveillance, training, and represents power projection capability. Critical importance for maritime security including Falklands/Malvinas area monitoring. Represents Argentine naval decline from 1980s peak capability requiring sustained investment for restoration. Future uncertain with costly modernization required or potential replacement.
