Overview

Japan's new-generation multi-mission frigate with advanced stealth design, representing a radical departure from previous JMSDF surface combatant concepts. Displacement of 5,500 tonnes full load with a highly automated crew of just 90 — approximately half that of comparable vessels, achieved through extensive automation and unmanned systems integration. Features a faceted stealth hull form with enclosed mast and reduced radar cross-section. The FFM is designed for mine countermeasures (incorporating an Unmanned Surface Vehicle and Unmanned Underwater Vehicle mine hunting system), anti-submarine warfare, and surface combat. Armed with Mk 41 VLS for ESSM and VL-ASROC, 8x Type 17 anti-ship missiles, 1x Mk 45 Mod 4 127mm gun, SeaRAM CIWS, and torpedo tubes. Features the OPY-2 AESA multi-function radar and OQQ-25 sonar system. 22 ships planned — the largest JMSDF surface combatant programme in decades.
