French-designed corvettes built under license in Egypt representing successful naval technology transfer and Egyptian shipbuilding capability. Egypt ordered 4 Gowind 2500 corvettes with first built in France, subsequent three at Alexandria Shipyard with French technical assistance and technology transfer. Commissioned from 2017 onwards. Displacement of 2,600 tonnes with length of 102 metres. Features Herakles multi-function radar, VLS launching Mica VL air defense missiles, Exocet MM40 Block 3 anti-ship missiles, 76mm main gun, torpedoes, helicopter flight deck (no hangar), modern combat management system, and stealth features reducing radar and infrared signatures. Propulsion via diesel providing 25+ knot speed. Crew of 65. Egyptian Gowind corvettes provide patrol, anti-surface, limited air defense, and general-purpose missions supplementing larger frigates. Stealth features enable covert operations. Indigenous construction at Alexandria Shipyard represents significant achievement developing domestic naval construction capability with modern warship design. Technology transfer includes combat systems integration, construction techniques, and project management. Egyptian shipbuilders gained invaluable experience applicable to future programmes. Regular patrol operations in Mediterranean and Red Sea. Critical for exclusive economic zone enforcement, counter-smuggling, and maritime security. Represents Egyptian naval industrial development supporting Vision 2030 goals.
