Toufan / Saba / Shahed-285 Helicopter Family

Iran's indigenous helicopter development programme aimed at producing domestic rotary-wing aircraft to replace aging American-supplied helicopters (AH-1J Cobra, Bell 205/212, CH-47) that Iran has maintained through reverse-engineering and cannibalization since the 1979 revolution. The programme includes multiple variants: Toufan (Iranian reverse-engineered AH-1J Cobra attack helicopter with upgraded avionics, weapons, and potentially turboshaft engines), Saba-248 (light utility helicopter based on Bell 206), Shahed-285 (medium utility helicopter derived from Bell 205/212), and the fully indigenous "Tactical Helicopter" programme developing a new-design multi-role helicopter. Development has been slow due to sanctions limiting access to turboshaft engines, avionics, and composite materials. Iran has achieved limited success producing upgraded attack helicopters and maintaining existing fleets through indigenous spare parts production. The National Helicopter programme aims to field a fully Iranian helicopter by the late 2020s, though technical challenges remain substantial. Small numbers of Toufan attack helicopters are operational with the IRGC Ground Forces.
