French-designed diesel-electric attack submarines built under technology transfer in India as part of Project 75. The Scorpene is a modern conventionally-powered submarine optimised for coastal and deep-water operations including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and special forces deployment. Displacement of 1,775 tonnes submerged with a length of 67 metres. Features an X-configured rudder for manoeuvrability, anechoic coating for acoustic stealth, and an advanced integrated combat management system. Armed with 6x 533mm torpedo tubes for heavyweight torpedoes and Exocet SM39 anti-ship missiles. The Indian Scorpenes incorporate indigenous systems including sonar, C4I, and periscopes. Crew of 31 with endurance of 50 days. Six boats building/commissioned: Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, Vela, Vagir, and Vagsheer. All boats commissioned by 2024. Project 75-India (P-75I) will procure additional advanced submarines with Air Independent Propulsion.

- Proven French design with excellent acoustic signature for stealth operations
- Technology transfer builds Indian submarine construction capability
- Modern combat management system and sensors
- Indigenous construction milestone — all 6 boats built in India
- No AIP — limited submerged endurance vs. modern AIP submarines
- Six boats insufficient for India submarine force requirements (24 target)
- Exocet SM39 anti-ship missile integration still pending
- French technology dependency for major maintenance and upgrades
