Project 75-India (P-75I)
Type: submarine
Domain: sea
Country of Origin: India
Manufacturer: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders
Overview
India's next-generation conventional submarine programme designed to provide the Indian Navy with advanced diesel-electric submarines equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) for extended submerged endurance. P-75I calls for 6 submarines to be built in India under Strategic Partnership with a foreign OEM providing design and technology transfer. Key requirements include AIP for endurance exceeding 14 days submerged, heavyweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, land-attack cruise missiles (potentially BrahMos-M), advanced sonar and combat systems, and the ability to launch special forces. Displacement estimated at 3,000+ tonnes. The programme has been delayed by complex procurement processes but is considered critical for maintaining submarine fleet strength as older Kilo and Type 209 boats retire. Competing designs include Naval Group (France), ThyssenKrupp (Germany), Navantia (Spain), Rosoboronexport (Russia), and South Korean shipbuilders. Selection and contract award expected mid-2020s.
