Saab RBS 70 NG

Swedish man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) using unique laser beam-riding guidance providing Brazilian ground forces with short-range air defense against helicopters, UAVs, and low-flying aircraft. Brazil procured RBS 70 NG (Next Generation) variant modernizing original RBS 70 systems operated since 1990s. The RBS 70 features revolutionary guidance where missile rides laser beam projected by operator onto target — providing complete immunity to infrared countermeasures (flares) and electronic jamming that defeat other MANPADS. Operator tracks target with optical sight and laser designator maintaining beam on target throughout flight. Missile range of 8+ km with altitude coverage to 5 km. Bolide missile (used in NG variant) features improved propulsion and warhead. Launch from tripod mount or vehicle-mounted launchers. Crew of 2-3. The laser guidance provides exceptional accuracy but requires operator maintain line-of-sight throughout engagement. Brazilian RBS 70 deploys with air defense batteries protecting strategic locations and accompanying mechanized forces. The system complements longer-range Skyguard/Aspide providing point defense. Proven combat effectiveness in multiple conflicts including Falklands War. Swedish continuous upgrades maintain capability against modern threats including small UAVs. Brazil evaluates potential indigenous MANPADS development but RBS 70 NG provides proven capability. Critical capability for protecting deployed forces from air attack particularly helicopters conducting close air support.
