1990'lardan beri ABD ordusunun standart 5.56x45mm NATO karabinasıdır. Gazla çalışan, hava soğutmalı, şarjörle beslenen ve tam otomatik yeteneği de dahil olmak üzere seçici ateş moduna sahiptir. ABD hizmetinde 500,000'den fazla bulunmaktadır. Yakın muharebe kuvvetleri için M7 ile kademeli olarak değiştirilmektedir ancak destek ve savaş dışı birimlerle hizmette kalmaya devam edecektir.
