Singapore operates six Formidable-class frigates — the most capable surface combatants in Southeast Asia. Derived from the French La Fayette-class design but comprehensively upgraded with full combat systems. The six ships (RSS Formidable, Intrepid, Steadfast, Tenacious, Stalwart, Supreme) were commissioned 2007-2009. Each displaces approximately 3,200 tonnes. Armament includes Aster 15/30 missiles from Sylver A50 VLS, 76mm OTO Melara gun, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, torpedo tubes, and Mistral MANPADS. Thales TACTICOS combat management provides sensor-weapon integration. Each vessel carries an S-70B Seahawk helicopter. Low-observable hull form reduces radar cross-section.

- Most advanced surface combatants in Southeast Asia by capability index
- Aster 30 VLS provides area air defense extending fleet protection umbrella
- Seahawk helicopter provides organic ASW and over-the-horizon targeting capability
- Low-observable hull design reduces radar detection range
- Harpoon anti-ship missiles provide credible sea-denial capability
- Six-ship fleet enables sustained operations with maintenance rotation
- Only 8 Aster 30 cells — limited magazine for sustained high-threat air operations
- French-origin systems create dependency on Naval Group for key upgrades
- Platform age increasing — commissioned 2007-2009, approaching mid-life
- No land-attack cruise missile capability for power projection
- Crew training for multi-mission frigates requires extensive pipeline
