Brazilian next-generation multi-role frigates combining German naval architecture with Brazilian systems integration — representing major surface combatant modernization for Brazilian Navy. Four frigates planned under Programa Fragatas Classe Tamandaré with first steel cutting 2021, expected delivery of lead ship F-101 Tamandaré from 2025-2026. Based on ThyssenKrupp MEKO A-200 design adapted for Brazilian requirements and tropical operations. Displacement of approximately 6,000+ tonnes with length of 144 metres. Features comprehensive air defense with VLS launching missiles, anti-ship missiles, 127mm main gun, torpedo tubes for anti-submarine warfare, helicopter facilities for embarked helicopter (potentially SH-60 Seahawk or NH90), TACTICOS combat management system, modern phased-array radar (potentially Thales APAR-based), hull-mounted and towed-array sonars, and comprehensive electronic warfare suite. Propulsion via diesel or diesel-electric providing 28+ knot speed. Construction at Brazilian shipyards (Estaleiro Atlântico Sul and Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro) with technology transfer. The programme emphasizes Brazilian content with domestic production of combat systems, communications, and potentially weapons. Tamandaré-class replaces aging Niterói-class frigates (British Type 22 derivatives from 1970s) providing modern capability for offshore patrol, sea lane protection, and task force operations. Represents Brazilian commitment to maintaining credible blue-water navy capability. Delays in programme but construction progressing.
