MEKO 200HN Hydra Class Frigate

GermanyThyssenKrupp Marine SystemsFragataComisionado:1992
DESCRIPCIÓN DEL SISTEMA

The Hydra class is the Hellenic Navy's primary general-purpose frigate — a Greek-built version of the German MEKO 200 modular frigate design. Four ships were constructed at Hellenic Shipyards: HS Hydra (F452), HS Spetsai (F453), HS Psara (F454), and HS Salamis (F455). The class carries RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Sea Sparrow point-defense SAM, a 76mm OTO Melara gun, MU90 torpedoes, and a single NH90 helicopter. The MEKO design's modular construction has simplified upgrades over three decades of service. They form the backbone of Hellenic Navy surface forces alongside the incoming FDI Belharra frigates.

VENTAJAS
  • Harpoon Block II provides long-range anti-ship capability in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean
  • Sea Sparrow launcher compatible with ESSM — path to upgrade to longer-range missiles
  • MEKO modular design simplifies upgrades — systems replaceable without complete rebuilds
  • Four-ship fleet provides meaningful patrol and deterrence coverage
  • NH90 helicopter integration gives organic ASW and surface surveillance capability
DESVENTAJAS
  • Platform dates to early 1990s — sensors and combat systems require continued investment
  • Sea Sparrow is an older point-defense system compared to Aster 30 on incoming FDI frigates
  • Radar suite lacks AESA capability
  • Being progressively replaced by FDI Belharra — long-term relevance declining
  • Small crew complement limits sustained operations tempo
