Carabina estándar de 5.56x45 mm de la OTAN del ejército de EE. UU. desde la década de 1990. Operada por gas, refrigerada por aire, alimentada por cargador con fuego selectivo que incluye capacidad de fuego automático. Más de 500,000 en servicio en EE. UU. Siendo reemplazada gradualmente por el M7 para fuerzas de combate cercano, pero permanecerá en servicio con unidades de apoyo y no combatientes durante décadas.
