Ecuador operates a small fleet of Krauss-Maffei Leopard 1 main battle tanks acquired from European surplus stocks, primarily for deterrence and as a training platform. The Leopard 1 features a 105mm rifled gun and relatively thin armor optimized for mobility over protection. In Ecuador's strategic context, the tanks serve as a deterrence force against border disputes and internal operations.
