Boeing F/A-18C/D Hornet MLU 2

DESCRIPCIÓN DEL SISTEMA

Finland's current frontline fighter fleet — extensively modernized through the Mid-Life Upgrade 2 (MLU 2) programme maintaining cutting-edge capability until F-35 replacement. Finland operates 62 F/A-18C (single-seat) and F/A-18D (two-seat) Hornets delivered 1995-2000, forming the backbone of Finnish air defense. The MLU 2 upgrade (2016-2025) includes Link 16 tactical datalink for network-centric operations, Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS) for off-boresight weapons employment, improved radar modes, upgraded electronic warfare suite, new mission computers, and integration of modern precision weapons including JDAM GPS-guided bombs, JSOW standoff weapons, and AIM-9X infrared missiles. The Finnish Hornets are optimized for dispersed operations from highway strips — a core defensive concept enabling operations after airbases are destroyed. Finnish pilots train extensively in Arctic conditions, night operations, and low-level flight in forested terrain. Combat radius exceeding 600 km with external tanks. The Hornets will remain operational until F-35 fleet reaches full operational capability in the 2030s. Finland's Hornets represent one of the most capable Hornet fleets globally thanks to comprehensive modernization.
