Type 20 Assault Rifle (Howa 5.56)
Japan's newest standard-issue assault rifle, replacing the Type 89 that served the Japan Self-Defense Forces since 1989. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, the Type 20 features a modern modular design with Picatinny/M-LOK accessory rails, adjustable telescoping stock, ambidextrous controls, and a short-stroke gas piston operating system for enhanced reliability. Available in standard (330mm barrel) and compact (250mm barrel) configurations. Designed with emphasis on ergonomics for Japanese physical characteristics, lighter weight, and compatibility with modern accessories including optics, suppressors, laser aiming devices, and grenade launchers. Features a free-floating barrel for improved accuracy. The Type 20 represents a significant modernisation of JSDF small arms capability, bringing Japanese infantry weapons up to contemporary Western standards. Full fielding across all three Self-Defense Force branches is ongoing.
