Leopard 2A4CHL
German Leopard 2 main battle tanks procured secondhand and adapted for Chilean requirements including high-altitude operations in Andes mountains — representing most capable armor in South America. Chile acquired 172 Leopard 2A4 from Netherlands and Germany (2007-2009) replacing obsolete Leopard 1V and AMX-30 tanks. Chilean variant designated 2A4CHL features modifications for operation at extreme altitudes (Chilean-Argentine border reaches 4,000+ metres), upgraded cooling systems, engine modifications for thin-air performance, improved fire control with thermal imaging, laser rangefinder, ballistic computer, and comprehensive maintenance/training support. Retains standard 120mm L/44 smoothbore gun providing exceptional firepower, composite armor providing protection against most anti-tank weapons, weight of 55 tonnes, powered by MTU 1,500 hp diesel, and crew of 4. Maximum road speed 68 km/h. Chilean Leopard 2A4CHL equips armored brigades providing credible deterrent and territorial defense capability. The Andes modifications enable operations in unique Chilean geographic conditions where thin air degrades normal tank performance. Represents major capability upgrade from earlier tanks. Regular exercises demonstrating proficiency. Chilean Leopard 2 fleet represents most modern armor concentration in region alongside Brazilian and Argentine modernization programmes. Future potential upgrades to 2A6/2A7 standards or continued operation with incremental improvements. Critical component of Chilean land power.
