Bavar-373 Air Defence System
Iran's most advanced indigenous long-range air and missile defence system, developed to provide capabilities comparable to Russia's S-300PMU-2 or S-400 systems after Russia delayed S-300 deliveries due to international sanctions. Bavar-373 (meaning "Belief" in Persian) features a phased-array radar with detection range reportedly exceeding 450 km for fighter-sized targets and 300 km for ballistic missiles, engagement range of 200-300 km depending on target type and missile variant, altitude coverage from near-ground to 27 km (some sources claim 65 km), and simultaneous engagement of multiple targets. The system fires the Sayyad-4B surface-to-air missile — a long-range interceptor using semi-active radar homing and inertial/command guidance. Each Bavar-373 battery includes a mobile 3D phased-array radar, engagement radar, command post, and multiple transporter-erector-launchers (TELs). The system provides overlapping coverage with older Russian S-200 and S-300PMU-2 systems, creating a layered air defence network protecting strategic sites including nuclear facilities, command centers, and Tehran. Operational since 2019 with multiple batteries deployed. Combat-tested intercepting targets in exercises, though effectiveness against advanced stealth aircraft remains unproven.

- Fully indigenous long-range SAM; free from Russian/Chinese supply dependencies
- Claimed performance approaches S-300PMU2 class
- Multiple missile variants for layered defense
- Mobile launcher configuration supports survivability
- Performance claims unverified by independent sources; likely overstated
- Radar and seeker technology likely a generation behind S-400/Patriot
- No combat-proven track record against advanced threats
- Limited production numbers; insufficient for comprehensive national air defense
