Type 19 155mm Wheeled SPH
Type: artillery
Domain: land
Country of Origin: Japan
Manufacturer: Japanese Defense Industry
First Deployed: 2019
Overview
Truck-mounted 155mm/52-calibre self-propelled howitzer developed for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, designed for strategic mobility across Japan's road network while providing NATO-standard heavy fire support. Mounted on a heavy-duty military truck chassis, the Type 19 can rapidly self-deploy over long distances at highway speeds before deploying for fire missions — critical for Japan's island defence strategy where guns must be quickly repositioned between potential threat axes. Features a semi-automated loading system with a rate of fire of 6 rounds/minute, digital fire control with automated laying, and compatibility with all NATO 155mm ammunition including precision-guided projectiles. Range of 30 km with standard ammunition and 40+ km with extended-range rounds. Represents Japan's shift from tracked SPH (Type 99) to wheeled platforms for improved strategic mobility. Entering service from 2019 to supplement and partially replace the Type 99 and towed FH-70.
