Overview
European medium utility helicopter providing Royal New Zealand Air Force with transport and naval operations capability. New Zealand procured 8 NH90 (combination of army and navy variants) with deliveries 2011-2014. Features capacity for 20 troops, external sling loads, advanced avionics, maritime operations capability. However, programme plagued by technical problems, low availability, high costs leading to significant New Zealand frustration. Naval variant particularly problematic. Despite issues, provides capability for troop transport, disaster relief, Antarctic operations. Future uncertain with potential early retirement discussed given serviceability challenges. Represents cautionary tale of multinational helicopter programme complexity and importance of supportability over pure performance. Contrast with reliable C-130J highlighting procurement risks.
