Overview
Senegal procured the Leonardo M-346FA (Fighter Attack) advanced jet trainer and light attack aircraft as part of a comprehensive air force modernization, becoming one of the first sub-Saharan African operators of the type alongside Nigeria. The M-346FA is the combat-capable variant of the M-346 Master trainer, featuring hardpoints for precision-guided munitions, an optional AESA radar, and modern glass cockpit matching contemporary fighter avionics standards. For Senegal, the aircraft fills a capability gap replacing the aging F-5E as both the advanced jet training platform and primary armed light attack aircraft. It provides genuine strike capability against the terrorist groups in the Sahel region threatening Senegalese security. Italian defense cooperation includes pilot training, ground crew qualification, simulator facilities, and long-term logistics support. The acquisition demonstrates Senegalese air force investment given the M-346FA unit cost, reflecting the importance placed on credible air power for regional security.
