Overview

Israeli multi-role fighter representing most capable combat aircraft in Colombian Air Force — modernized variants of classic Kfir providing air defense, ground attack, and counter-insurgency capability. Colombia operates 24 Kfir across C10 and C12 variants acquired from Israel (originally surplus, later upgraded). Kfir based on French Mirage 5 airframe with Israeli avionics, weapons, and American engine creating unique fighter. C10/C12 modernization features Elta EL/M-2032 pulse-Doppler radar with air-to-air and air-to-ground modes, modern glass cockpit with multi-function displays, helmet-mounted display, new mission computer, datalink, GPS/INS navigation, improved electronic warfare suite, conformal fuel tanks extending range, and capability for modern weapons including Python-5 short-range AAMs, Derby medium-range AAMs, precision-guided bombs, laser-guided bombs, and air-to-ground missiles. Powered by General Electric J79 turbojet providing maximum speed Mach 2+. Combat radius approximately 700+ km. Colombian Kfirs conduct air defense patrol, ground attack against narcotics targets and illegal armed groups, close air support for ground forces, and interdiction missions. Combat-proven in decades of Colombian internal conflict demonstrating effectiveness. The modernization extends service life through 2030s maintaining capability pending future fighter procurement. Represents pragmatic solution for Colombian air power requirements balancing capability and affordability. Future potential replacement with F-16V or similar modern fighters under consideration.
