Overview
American multi-role fighter representing backbone of Egyptian Air Force and largest F-16 fleet outside United States — providing comprehensive combat capability despite restrictions on most advanced weapons. Egypt operates approximately 220+ F-16C/D across multiple blocks (Block 32, 40, 52) acquired through US Foreign Military Sales from 1980s through 2000s-2010s. The Block 52 (latest Egyptian variant) features APG-68(V)9 mechanically-scanned pulse-Doppler radar, modern glass cockpit with color multi-function displays, improved mission computer, Link 16 datalink, night-vision compatible lighting, conformal fuel tanks (on some aircraft) extending range, and General Electric F110-GE-129 turbofans providing 29,000 lbf thrust. However, Egyptian F-16 delivered without AIM-120 AMRAAM beyond-visual-range missiles due to US policy restricting most advanced weapons to maintain Israeli qualitative military edge. Egyptian F-16s armed with AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range AAMs, AIM-7 Sparrow semi-active radar AAMs, AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, precision-guided bombs, and unguided munitions. Maximum speed Mach 2+ with combat radius exceeding 500 km. Egyptian F-16 fleet conducts air defense, ground attack, maritime strike, and close air support missions operating from multiple air bases. Despite weapons restrictions, F-16 remains critical Egyptian capability providing numbers and backbone for diverse missions. Egyptian procurement of Rafale and MiG-29M partly driven by desire for unrestricted beyond-visual-range missiles unavailable on F-16. Ongoing maintenance and upgrades maintain capability through 2030s+.
