AMX A-1M
Type: strike
Domain: air
Country of Origin: Brazil
Manufacturer: Embraer Defense & Security
First Deployed: 1989
Overview
Brazilian-Italian ground-attack aircraft comprehensively modernized to A-1M standard extending service life and maintaining capability through 2030s. Original AMX (designated A-1 in Brazilian service) resulted from 1980s collaboration between Brazil, Italy, and initially Germany developing subsonic strike aircraft optimized for close air support and battlefield interdiction. Brazil procured 56 AMX with domestic production at Embraer. Recognition of continued utility prompted A-1M modernization programme upgrading avionics, weapons, sensors, and self-protection systems. Features include new multi-function displays replacing analog instruments, radar warning receiver and countermeasures dispensers, Elta EL/M-2032 pulse-Doppler radar providing air-to-air and air-to-ground modes, capability to employ precision-guided munitions including laser-guided bombs and GPS-guided weapons, night-vision compatible cockpit, improved navigation systems with GPS, and datalink. Powered by single Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan providing high subsonic speed (Mach 0.86). Armed with 20mm cannon, bombs, rockets, and guided weapons. The A-1M serves as primary close air support platform supporting Brazilian Army operations particularly in Amazon region. The modernization provides capability comparable to modern light attack aircraft at fraction of new aircraft costs. Brazilian AMX participated in numerous exercises demonstrating effective ground-attack capability. Complementary to Brazilian Gripen fighters focusing on air-to-ground missions.
