Al-Zarrar MBT
Type: tank
Domain: land
Country of Origin: Pakistan
Manufacturer: NESCOM (Pakistan)
Overview
Pakistan's comprehensive modernisation of the Chinese Type 59 (itself a Chinese-produced copy of the Soviet T-54A), transforming the obsolete 1950s-era tank into a relatively capable platform for second-line and reserve formations. The Al-Zarrar upgrade programme includes replacing the original 100mm rifled gun with a 125mm smoothbore gun compatible with modern ammunition, installation of explosive reactive armour (ERA) blocks on the turret and hull for improved protection against HEAT rounds, a modern fire control system with laser rangefinder and night vision, smoke grenade launchers, and improved engine cooling. The Pakistani upgrade retains the original chassis and suspension but adds modern fire control and protection at minimal cost. Weight increased to 42 tonnes. While not comparable to modern MBTs, the Al-Zarrar provides meaningful capability against older threats and enables Pakistan to retain large armoured formations at affordable cost. Over 500 Al-Zarrar conversions completed from the Type 59 fleet. The tanks primarily equip reserve and second-line armoured units.
