India's next-generation light tank designed specifically for high-altitude mountain warfare along the Line of Actual Control with China in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. Named after the legendary Dogra general Zorawar Singh, the tank is designed for rapid deployment via airlift (C-17) to forward areas where heavy MBTs cannot operate effectively due to altitude, terrain, and bridge limitations. Expected weight of 25 tonnes with a 105mm gun (potentially a new 120mm lightweight gun), advanced fire control system with hunter-killer capability, modular armour providing protection against RPGs and medium-calibre threats while maintaining air-portability, and a 650+ hp engine providing mobility in thin mountain air. The design reportedly incorporates technologies demonstrated in the K21 and other modern light armoured vehicles. Development accelerated following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash with China. Indian Army plans approximately 350 Zorawar tanks to equip mountain strike corps. First prototypes expected 2025-2026.

- Purpose-built for Himalayan high-altitude operations at LAC against China
- Air-transportable (C-17/IL-76) for rapid strategic deployment to mountain sectors
- Fills critical capability gap — Arjun and T-90 too heavy for eastern mountain sectors
- Addresses direct lesson from 2020 Galwan Valley clash
- Light armor (25t) offers limited protection against Chinese ZTQ-15 peers
- Still in prototype phase — IOC timeline remains uncertain
- Performance and reliability at extreme altitudes (4,500m+) unproven
- 105mm gun may be inadequate against modern MBT-class opponents
