American M109 155mm self-propelled howitzer comprehensively modernized by Brazil to A5+ standard providing modern artillery capability with Brazilian-specific enhancements. Brazil acquired approximately 70+ M109A3 from surplus US stocks and European armies, conducting major upgrade programme transforming to A5+ BR standard (BR = Brazil). The modernization includes 155mm/39-calibre barrel upgrade (from original 155mm/23), improved recoil mechanism, semi-automatic ammunition loading increasing rate of fire, Brazilian-designed digital fire control system with GPS/INS navigation, ballistic computer, improved communications integrating with Brazilian artillery networks, and potentially improved armor and NBC protection. Maximum range extended to 24+ km with standard ammunition or 30+ km with rocket-assisted projectiles. Rate of fire of 4 rounds/minute sustained. Weight approximately 27 tonnes. Powered by Detroit Diesel providing road speed of 56 km/h. Crew of 6. Brazilian M109A5+ BR equips artillery brigades providing mobile fire support for mechanized and infantry divisions.
