Gelecek nesil konvansiyonel denizaltı, Kilo sınıfının yerini almak üzere tasarlandı ve geliştirilmiş gizlilik, otomasyon ve savaş sistemleri sunuyor. Planlanan varyantlarda hava bağımsız tahrik (AIP) özelliği, otomasyon sayesinde azaltılmış mürettebat, LIRA savaş yönetim sistemi ve Kalibr füze yeteneği bulunuyor. Öncü gemi Sankt Peterburg, genişletilmiş testlere tabi tutuldu; takip eden gemiler Kronshtadt ve Velikiye Luki iyileştirmeler içeriyor.
