Kang Ding Class Frigate

SİSTEM GENEL BAKIŞI

The Kang Ding-class (also known as the Lafayette-class in Taiwan) is a stealth frigate derived from the French La Fayette design. Six ships were delivered to the Republic of China Navy between 1996–1998. Each displaces ~3,600 tonnes and is equipped with Hsiung Feng II/III anti-ship missiles, Chaparral short-range SAMs, torpedoes, and a 76mm main gun. The class forms the backbone of the ROC Navy's surface combatant fleet but has suffered from a corruption scandal during procurement and ongoing French support restrictions due to Chinese diplomatic pressure.

AVANTAJLAR
  • Stealth hull design derived from La Fayette — reduced radar cross-section
  • Hsiung Feng II/III integration provides credible anti-ship strike against PLAN vessels
  • Six-ship class gives the ROC Navy meaningful surface combatant mass
  • Helipad for helicopter ASW and surface search operations
  • Modern for its era — better than legacy destroyers it replaced
DEZAVANTAJLAR
  • France restricted upgrades and spare parts under Chinese diplomatic pressure — sustained readiness issues
  • Original Sea Chaparral SAM is outdated — very limited area air defense
  • 1990s design — full modernization needed to meet current PLAN threat
  • Procurement corruption scandal damaged program credibility and affected deliveries
  • Limited ASW sensor suite compared to purpose-built ASW frigates
