Advanced armed unmanned aerial vehicle providing Dutch military with persistent intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and precision strike capability. Netherlands ordered 4 MQ-9 Reaper Block 5 systems with deliveries from 2021-2022, becoming one of the few European operators of armed UAVs. The MQ-9 Block 5 features turboprop engine providing 27+ hour endurance, operational altitude up to 50,000 feet, maximum range of 1,150+ nautical miles, multi-mode radar (Lynx II) for ground surveillance and maritime patrol, electro-optical/infrared turret with high-definition video, electronic support measures (ESM) for signals intelligence, satellite communications for beyond-line-of-sight control, and hardpoints for weapons and sensors. Armament includes AGM-114 Hellfire missiles (precision strikes against vehicles and personnel), GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs (500 lb), GBU-38 JDAM GPS-guided bombs, and potentially additional precision weapons. Payload capacity of 1,700+ kg. Dutch MQ-9s operate from Leeuwarden Air Base with No. 306 Squadron. Primary missions include counter-terrorism operations, maritime surveillance, border security, and support to deployed Dutch forces. The MQ-9 dramatically extends Dutch military reach providing persistent surveillance and strike capability previously requiring manned aircraft. Netherlands emphasizes lawful use of armed UAVs with strict rules of engagement. Represents Dutch commitment to modern ISR and precision strike capabilities.
