Al-Hussein MBT
The Al-Hussein is the Jordanian Army's primary main battle tank — a heavily modernized version of the British Challenger 1 (FV4030/4) modified by the King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) with significant local adaptations for Middle Eastern conditions. Upgrades include improved fire control with thermal imaging, a laser rangefinder, and locally-developed reactive armor packages. Approximately 390 units are in service. The Al-Hussein retains the original 120mm L11A5 rifled gun and Chobham composite armor, giving it strong protection against older threats. Efforts to upgrade or replace the Al-Hussein are ongoing, with Jordan in discussions for Leclerc and other alternatives.

- Chobham composite armor — excellent protection against HEAT warheads and older kinetic penetrators
- KADDB modernization adapted the platform to Jordan's specific operational and climatic requirements
- Thermal imaging and laser rangefinder enable effective night combat
- Well-suited to Jordanian desert terrain with good dust filtration systems
- 390-unit fleet provides substantial armored mass for a mid-sized military
- Challenger 1 hull dates to 1983 — fundamental design now four decades old
- 120mm L11A5 rifled gun fires HESH and APFSDS but trails modern smoothbore NATO cannon in KE performance
- Heavy at ~62 tonnes — limited strategic airlift and bridging options
- Vickers/Challenger supply chain has deteriorated — spare parts increasingly difficult to source
- No active protection system — vulnerable to advanced ATGM tandem warheads

SIGN INAmmunition capacity versus protection trade-off here reflects deliberate doctrinal choices worth examining.

Endurance figures for sustained blue-water operations are solid, though replenishment cycles still constrain operational planning.
