Russian main battle tank procured by Venezuela as part of comprehensive military modernization during peak oil revenue period — providing armored capability but facing sustainment challenges. Venezuela ordered 92 T-72B1V (modernized export variant of Soviet T-72B) from Russia 2010-2011 with deliveries completed by 2013. Features 125mm smoothbore gun with autoloader firing armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) penetrators, high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) rounds, and potentially gun-launched anti-tank guided missiles (9M119 Refleks), composite armor with explosive reactive armor (ERA) bricks providing enhanced protection, 1,130 hp engine providing mobility for 41-tonne weight, modern fire control with laser rangefinder and ballistic computer, and night vision capability.
