Smart-L MM/BMD Radar

DESCRIPCIÓN DEL SISTEMA

Dutch long-range L-band naval surveillance radar upgraded to provide space surveillance and ballistic missile defense capability — one of the most powerful naval radars globally with detection ranges exceeding 2,000 km. SMART-L (Signal Multibeam Acquisition Radar for Targeting) was originally developed for air surveillance on Dutch frigates. The MM (Multi Mission) and BMD (Ballistic Missile Defence) upgrade transforms the system into strategic sensor for ballistic missile tracking, satellite surveillance, and space debris monitoring. Features massive rotating planar array antenna (8 metres x 8 metres), electronic beam steering in elevation enabling simultaneous tracking of hundreds of targets, detection range of 400+ km for aircraft and 2,000+ km for ballistic missiles, capability to track satellites in low earth orbit, integration with NATO ballistic missile defense networks via Link 16, and exceptional performance against low-observable targets. Installed on De Zeven Provinciën-class frigates and exported to Germany (F124 frigates), Denmark, and others. The radar enables Dutch frigates to contribute to NATO BMD providing early warning of ballistic missile launches and cueing interceptor systems. Successfully demonstrated tracking of satellites and space debris. Continuous upgrades add capability against hypersonic threats and improved discrimination. Represents Dutch leadership in naval radar technology with Thales Nederland being global center of excellence for naval sensors.

Smart-L MM/BMD Radar - Thales Group
VENTAJAS
  • Among the most powerful naval radar systems globally — 2,000+ km ballistic missile detection
  • Ballistic missile and space debris tracking contributes to NATO BMD architecture
  • L-band provides excellent detection performance against low-observable targets
  • Dutch indigenous technology with strong export potential (Germany, Denmark, Belgium)
DESVENTAJAS
  • Large rotating antenna limits installation to larger warships only
  • L-band provides detection but not fire-control quality data — requires APAR pairing
  • Requires integration with X-band APAR for engagement-quality tracking
  • High power requirements constrain ship electrical systems
