ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System)
India's next-generation 155mm/52-calibre towed howitzer designed to be one of the longest-range and most advanced towed artillery systems in the world. ATAGS features an ultra-long 52-calibre barrel providing range exceeding 48 km with standard ammunition and 60+ km with rocket-assisted projectiles, automated gun laying with inertial navigation and GPS, all-electric drive for rapid traverse and elevation, advanced recoil system allowing sustained high rates of fire, and modular design for ease of maintenance. The gun can fire 6 rounds/minute (sustained) or 10 rounds/minute (burst) with automated ammunition handling assistance. Mounted on a 6x6 all-terrain truck for tactical mobility. Weight of approximately 18 tonnes. Two variants are under development by competing consortia (Bharat Forge and TATA). ATAGS has achieved world-record range in trials. The Indian Army plans orders exceeding 400 guns to replace aging 130mm and 155mm weapons. Initial production expected 2025-2026.

- Record-breaking range (48+ km) — claimed world record for towed 155mm howitzer
- Fully indigenous design and manufacturing — sovereign supply chain
- All-electric drive system reduces maintenance vs. hydraulic alternatives
- Long barrel L52 provides superior ballistics
- Heavy (~18t) vs. comparable towed guns — M777 is only 4.2t for air portability
- Extended development delays have significantly slowed induction timeline
- Towed concept losing operational relevance vs. self-propelled systems
- Production capacity limited by domestic industrial constraints
