Myanmar Civil War: Resistance Forces Gain Territory as Military Junta Weakens

ASIA ORIENTAL & PACÍFICO
RESUMEN EJECUTIVO

Opposition forces in Myanmar have captured key border towns and military positions, signaling a potential shift in the civil war as the military junta faces its most serious territorial losses since the 2021 coup.

Myanmar's civil war has reached a critical juncture as resistance forces, including ethnic armed organizations and People's Defense Forces, have captured significant territory from the ruling military junta. Operation 1027, launched by the Three Brotherhood Alliance in northern Shan State, resulted in the capture of multiple towns and military bases along the China-Myanmar border. The offensive has spread to other regions, with resistance groups making advances in Chin, Kayah, and Karen states. The military junta has responded with airstrikes on civilian areas and attempted counteroffensives, but faces severe manpower shortages and declining morale. China has played a mediating role in northern Shan State due to concerns over border stability and illegal online scam operations. The territorial losses represent the most significant military setback for the Tatmadaw since seizing power in February 2021.
