INTELLIGENCE ASSESSMENT: India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted a flight test of its long-range hypersonic missile from the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island complex off the coast of Odisha. The missile achieved speeds in excess of Mach 6 during the test and struck its target with high accuracy.

The test validates India's indigenous hypersonic technology development program, which has been in active development for over a decade. The missile employs a scramjet propulsion system developed by DRDO's Defence Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad.

The weapon system is designed for precision strikes against high-value strategic targets at extended ranges, with an estimated operational range exceeding 1,500 kilometers. The hypersonic flight profile makes the missile extremely difficult to intercept using current generation air defense systems.

India joins a small group of nations with demonstrated hypersonic weapons capability, alongside the United States, Russia, and China. The development is particularly significant given the ongoing modernization of adversary air defense networks in the region.

Strategic analysts note the missile provides India with a credible stand-off strike capability that significantly enhances its deterrence posture along both the northern border with China and the western frontier with Pakistan.
