Merkava Mk4M Windbreaker
The Merkava Mk4M is the definitive variant of Israel's flagship main battle tank equipped with the Rafael Trophy (Windbreaker) active protection system — making it the first operational tank worldwide with a proven hard-kill APS. The Trophy system uses radar to detect incoming anti-tank missiles and RPGs, then fires a focused shotgun-like blast to destroy the threat projectile before impact. This system has been repeatedly proven in combat in Gaza operations since 2011, intercepting hundreds of anti-tank threats with near-100% effectiveness. The Mk4M features the IMI 120mm MG253 smoothbore gun with LAHAT gun-launched guided missile capability, advanced modular composite armour with emphasis on crew protection (the Merkava uniquely places the engine at the front for additional crew protection), 1,500 hp Continental AVDS-1790 diesel, and the Elbit El-Op Knight Mk4 fire control system. Weight of 65 tonnes. The IDF operates approximately 360 Mk4/Mk4M tanks.

- Trophy APS combat-proven; multiple confirmed intercepts against RPGs and ATGMs in Gaza
- Crew protection philosophy (engine in front) maximizes survivability
- Internal mortar system for indirect fire in urban combat
- Rear compartment can evacuate 2-3 wounded infantry under armor
- Continuous combat upgrades based on real operational feedback
- Very heavy (65t); limited strategic deployability outside Israel
- Front-mounted engine reduces frontal armor volume
- Not designed for export; logistics chain entirely domestic
- High fuel consumption constrains operational range
