Borei-A Class (Project 955A)
The Borei-A (Project 955A) is Russia's most advanced nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) and the core of Russia's sea-based nuclear deterrent. Displacing ~24,000 tonnes submerged, it carries 16 RSM-56 Bulava SLBMs each with 6-10 MIRV warheads (yield ~150 kT each). The Borei-A is quieter than its predecessor with pump-jet propulsion reducing radiated noise. Arctic under-ice operations provide near-undetectable second-strike patrol areas. Four Borei-A boats are in service (2021-2024) with additional hulls building. Together with the earlier Borei (955), the class provides 80+ nuclear warheads from sea.

- Bulava SLBM with 6-10 MIRV warheads
- Pump-jet for reduced acoustic signature
- 8300km Bulava range for global strike
- 24000t submerged for safety margin
- 16 missiles gives 96-160 warheads per boat
- Bulava had many failed test launches during development
- Complex nuclear maintenance
- 29-knot speed creates cavitation noise
- Production rate slower than planned
